Hi Lizy,

Clarification of two responses above. Putting aside for now related medical careers that were mentioned and also deserve your attention, to specifically become an MD-Pediatrician, here is the quick summary:

Graduate high school

4 years of undergraduate college

4 years of medical school

3 years of Pediatric residency

Another one or two years of fellowship if you want to subspecialize within Pediatrics.

Good luck,

Perry

If that's your heart's desire, I absolutely think that you should get an idea of what that world looks like and understand the various complications related to pediatrics. It doesn't hurt to be well versed in your subject matter ahead of the program! I think you'll be able to better apply your learning. I'm inspired by your motivation at such a young age! With support, I have no doubt that you're going to achieve your goals!

Some high schools offer classes where you can begin nursing courses, which will be really helpful for your future. If your school has this program, you should definitely join. These classes can count towards your college courses, which is great since you're only 16. It's a good idea to start planning now. Volunteering can also be beneficial. Talk to college advisors and your high school counselor; they can guide you too. I'm sure you'll do great!

If you are a pediatrician at age 16, they you must skip several grades and graduate early. This is the path to be a pediatrician:
1. graduate high school
2. graduate college
3. attend 4 years of medical school
4. finish 3 years of residency in pediatrics
Thank you comment icon Dr. Chuang is correct for the American system. It is a bit different in other countries, but it does require many years of devoted study/work. If you can succeed, you would be in a fantastic career at the end of that training and education. James Hanson

Debra’s Answer

Yes, you absolutely can! At 16, you can begin working toward your degree by taking a trade class and becoming a Medical Assistant. Some high schools offer these programs, but if yours doesn’t, you can wait until you’re 18 and enroll in an online program like Stepful to earn your Medical Assistant certification.

Once you become an MA, you can gain valuable experience working under a pediatrician or at a children’s hospital. Some hospitals also offer tuition assistance or educational benefits that can help pay for your college education while you work toward becoming a pediatrician.

So don’t think you have to wait until you graduate college to start building your career. Start early, gain experience, make connections, and let your experience help open doors for your future! ❤️
