To become a PT, you will need to complete an undergrad degree, usually taking 4 years. Then you can apply to PT schools that will then be an additional 2.5-3 years finishing with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. A DPT is the "entry-level" degree needed to practice physical therapy. Some schools that have DPT programs have "bridge" programs for those who get undergrad degrees at the same school that may decrease the time by a semester or two but often a student has to pre-qualify for those programs and adhere to GPA requirements to keep that pre-qualification.
This sounds like a lot of time, and it is, but it is SO worth it! Donna

Above answers are accurate! But I'd also like to mention that there are 6-year BS/DPT programs that allow you to graduate with your Bachelor's and Doctorate in PT in 1 year less (3 years for Bachelor's, then 3 years of the DPT program). I did this program and it was so worth it because I didn't need to take the GRE, write extra essays, or apply to other PT schools after undergrad. Boston University, Northeastern University, and University of Miami are examples of schools that adopt this 6-year program!

If you're in high school, I suggest looking up these programs if you are certain you want to become a PT!

Hi Brikiya,


I have friends and family that are physical therapists. From their experience, most DPT programs are an additional 3 years after completing an undergraduate degree of 4 years, for a total of 7 years of college education. It is a lot of years of schooling but both my sister in law and friend who are physical therapists love it and love helping others.

It is 3 years of graduate school after you have achieved an undergrad degree and been accepted into a PT program. Many people spend a year in between undergrad and grad school to work as a PT Tech
