How do I obtain a job in Property Management?

One of my career goals is to become an Assistant Property Manager but it seems difficult to apply for a job in this position or at least get a job as an administrative assistant in this field and work your way up. #management #business #job-search

Working as an Administrative Assistant is a fantastic way to learn about Property Management. It allows you an opportuity to touch all of the different areas within the business before working your way up. Many Property Management companies look for Assistant Managers who started off in the Adminstrative Role so dont bypass this important starting off point. Many Property Management companies also look for interns so this is a great way to get a feel for the industry before applying for management roles.

Patrice’s Answer

Why not shoot for the stars and become a Property Manager instead of an assistant Property Manager.  You should get a college degree in business management or real estate or property management.  Or you can complete courses offered by the Institute of Real estate management and also know the laws around rental property management.

Stephen’s Answer

Great question. I would learn as much I could about real estate. You can look for an internship with a realtor, especially one that works to lease properties for investors. Learn all that you can about leases, repairs, fair housing and working with tenants. You can also look for job with large property managers that work on apartment complexes. Even just answering the phone and listening to tenants questions is a great way to learn. The more you can learn about properties and tenants, the better position you will be in to grow your career. You should set a goal to eventually become a property manager. You can do it!

You can always find a local Property Management company even one that manages residential rental properties to start out with. Then move up into large building property management.

I would get in touch with someone near you in that field. They could explain how to get into the field and what course or licenses are needed.
