What tips and tricks do people have for passing anatomy and physiology?

I have heard that A&P is one of the most difficult classes to pass for nursing. I have also heard that you have to apply yourself fully and study very intensely. What advice do you have for new students that are trying this class for the first time? #nursing #college-major #healthcare

marleigh’s Answer

In medical school, Anatomy was one of the ver first classes we had to take. I made sure to thoroughly study an atlas the night before a dissection or particular lecture. Netter's was the atlas i used, and i read it so many times that the pages are falling out. I also made use of mnemonics, because there is a ton of rote memorization.

marleigh recommends the following next steps:

study netter or grey daily
in class, take notes, but also record lectures
listen to recorded lectures and add to notes taken in class
study those notes over and over

Great question Julianna. When I took A&P I made sure to read the chapters prior to class and prepared questions. Make sure to listen to the lecture and take really good notes.

I would also recommend finding your preferred study method. For me, I would make note cards- tons of note cards with bright pen colors. I would study them very consistently. I would do a concentrated study session- 20-30 minutes, then take a 5 minute break, and then repeat that process. I also found that having others quiz me on the notecards was helpful.

Some of my friends would ask to do group study sessions. I would participate sometimes, but didn't find them to be as helpful. You may also try some music element in the background as long as it does not distract you.

Good luck!

Jill’s Answer

1. Study the atlas ahead of any dissections.
2. I created lists of the anatomical features that we were studying each week and I would try to imagine them in my head from all angles.
3. Study groups can help to stay on track. I liked to have a study group before class so we could understand what the lecture was going to be on and then we'd have extra study group meetings before exams.
4. Our brain learns by building connections, so work off of what you know. Build mental models, build real models, color models. Do what makes sense to you to help make it natural.
