Ishant’s Answer

I am coaching my kid and my wife for swimming. I help my mother learning computer in her 65s along with what and what not to do on watsapp and facebook, I go out every evening with my kid to park and I do eat my dinner with family almost all the days. So, I do get a good portion of my 24 hours to spend with my family and I am an engineer.

Jake’s Answer

As a software engineer, I make this question myself every day. I guess that the bottom line is in what company do you work at. For example, big companies tend to have tight deadlines and the world-load is much heavier.

Nevertheless, you need to consider two big things: your work schedule is 40 h a week and (depending on the role type) you won't get paid for extra hours. Therefore, my personal advice is to keep your mental sanity and family life as the highest priority. If you don't do this, no one will do it for you.

As an additional note, it is understandable having a "crunch" once in a while, so factor that too. Hope this solves your questions.

Nir’s Answer

Software engineer is an excellent career choice for those who want to make money and also have time to not work. It pays very well and has an industry culture of actually going home on time. Depending on your company, you could be out the door with no added pressure at 5 PM everyday and be making upwards of 100k. This is in stark contrast with medicine, law finance, where you are compensated very well but are expected to dedicate your life to your job.
