Jason’s Answer

Animate. If you like it, do it. Look at many types of animation. Ask yourself "What do I like?" Know this, because it will lead you to the kind of work that makes you happy.

Gates’s Answer

Hi!

If you want to make animation, the good news is that you can animate almost anything. Table salt, wood grain, paper texture, a drawn character, your best friend, a potato chip, a puppet, some clay, a piece of string, an old shoe! The possibilities are endless. All you need to do is download an app on your phone, for example Stikbot Studios is the app I use and get started.

The one thing animation needs is lots of pictures. Take your phone and place it somewhere steady. Then, take your drawing, your object, your friend, your potato chip, and move it the smallest bit and take a picture. Then do it again, then again, then 20 more times and keep going!

Once you have played with this, you can challenge yourself by creating a story for your character.

For inspiration:

For animating real people google "Neighbors" by Norman Mclaren

For hand drawing animation, google "Hen Hop" by Norman Mclaren.

For cut outs, google "Hedgehog in the Fog" Yuri Norstein

For clay and puppetry, check out "Wallace and Gromit" Nick Park

Also check out Ray Harryhausen and his work on Jason and the Argonauts

It is VERY important to start with the basic principles of animation. Once you have experimented with these you will be able to create an expressive narrative. I began animating at camp with clay. Clay is an inexpensive and fun way to start animation. Later you can use computer programs like photoshop and maya, but it is important to start with tangible objects and hand drawn characters if possible.

Most important- HAVE FUN!! You will learn a lot when you are having a great time!
