Rashmi’s Answer

There are several start up institute that offers courses in professional make-up/creative make-up/bridal make-up.
This could be only for a about a month or a two where the instructor covers a whole range of topics. Once can find professionals offering courses on YouTube. A lot of them subscribe and learn it online. A really awesome field to be part of. A lot to explore and learn.

Ellen’s Answer

Hi Yasmin:

Such a fun and creative field! My great aunt was a "Makeup Guru"; she had gone to cosmetology school and sold makeup in high-end department stores. She did very well with her commissions and loved making women look and feel their best. There are also many other venues where cosmetologists work.

You didn't say what grade you are in, but here are some basic steps you might want to explore. Be sure to tell your family about your future dream and that you take "make-up" seriously. Getting their support early on could be important in making your dream come true.

  1. Be informed about make-up trends; go to the library to read the fashion magazines, look at Youtube videos, check out Instagram for ideas. If your parents allow, practice some of the trends on yourself or your friends.
  2. Visit the make-up counter of a department store, or visit an Ulta or Sephora store and look around. Go on a "slow" day (not a Saturday!) and just look at the makeup and see if the make-up consultants/clerks have time to talk to you. If you can, plan on buying a lipstick or something inexpensive and ask to be "made-up" (if they have time). If you are old enough to get a job, you might ask about working part-time after school or on weekends.
  3. If your high school offers a class in cosmetology, take that course. In addition, take some art classes, where you'll gain some good knowledge about color and where you'll practice your hand skills.
  4. Take some Theatre Arts classes, or join an after school theatre arts club, and work to be one of the make-up artists for performances.
  5. Visit your local library or career center at your school (if you have one) and start researching "make-up artists" or careers in cosmetology . Your librarian can help you find some websites about careers.

I hope this helps you get started. Best wishes!
