I'm also curious what doctors usually do?

Kim’s Answer

Aliza, If a baby or mother dies, due to medical complications, and the doctor did everything possible to try to save them, then no, the doctor is not going to get fired. If there was negligence involved, then, they might get fired. Either way, the family may sue the doctor and the hospital. That is why doctors carry malpractice insurance.

All of that aside, any time a doctor loses a patient it is traumatic to the doctor as well. You will learn to develop coping skills for dealing with these types of situations. There are many doctors who simply practice in the office, rather than hospital/surgery, so that might be something to consider as well.

Richard’s Answer

No they usually won't get fired. Unfortunately, sometimes diseases cannot be cured and death is inevitable.

However if the the physician violates the standard of care, they may be sued or even lose their medical license. If loss of medical license happens then the physician would be unable to practice medicine.
