Should I take an AP US History class if I'm already taking an AP English class and going to manage a new club? Should I take this AP or do community college classes online?

Jose’s Answer

Hi Gina,

1st question: Honestly, it all depends on how you feel about your current workload. If you feel you are not being challenged enough or you still have free time that you'd like to fill with another AP class, then go for it. If you feel you'd have to sacrifice your grade in AP English by taking on another AP class, then I'd suggest you refrain.

2nd question: AP US History does give you college credit, but only if you take the AP test at the end of the school year and pass. If you are not sure you will take the AP test, or if you can get college credit for other courses online like pre-calculus or physics (or a class that will be in your college degree curriculum), then I would suggest you take the community college classes online instead.

I hope this helps!

If you think you are prepared for the AP class and you have the capacity, then I would encourage you to take it. These classes help you complete the core college courses early on so you can focus your college class work on what you truly want to major in.

Estelle’s Answer

One of the benefits of an AP class is that sometimes you can gain an A as credit toward your GPA rather than the Pass you would receive from transferring that credit from a community college.

Simeon’s Answer

See if your picks for colleges are covered by the AP exams. AP history classes are very involved, so I understand the stress you'd be hoping to avoid. I took AP World History in high school and it saved me from having to do two classes in undergrad, so it paid off for me to take it. If it's too much of a burden to do so many AP classes, the community college classes work just as well.
