G. Mark’s Answer

There is a set of values that most companies prize and require. The reason is that the general trend in most companies is bigger projects, more ambitious goals, making enough money to stay in business.

1) You should be able to work on a team. That doesn't just mean cooperation, it also means sharing your knowledge. Communicate. Present. Mentor. A growing company, for example, will need experienced folks to move on but also to make sure their previous role is filled. Don't be the "shy person no one hears from". You multiply your effectiveness by sharing.

2) Customer focus isn't just "nice", it's the reason for your company existing. Take a cue from "Design Thinking". It's understanding the customer's entire environment, NOT just from your point of view or just your product's role. What can you do to actually improve your customer's situation?

3) Don't reinvent the wheel. Learn what other smart people have already solved and use those solutions. Then build on that, possibly in new ways and new combinations and new situations, to innovate. That's how your company will differentiate itself and how all companies will compete to provide the most value to the customer.

Frank’s Answer

Hi Keyanna,

It's great you're asking this! It's important for all members of a company to understand the values that drive the business. Speaking at a general level, here are few values that many companies seek:

  1. Working Together - Collaboration is key to success! If team members can't work well together as a team, then how can productive and quality results be achieved? Many companies will offer training workshops to facilitate developing comfort and success with this goal.
  2. Keeping a Customer Focus - After all, it's the customer who's buying products and output, if the customer's requirements aren't met, then revenue goals and growth aren't going to do well. Companies often integrate this concept into working practices, such as using their own products, hosting customer evaluations, and watching carefully over what works and what doesn't!
  3. Employee Growth - Savvy companies will encourage and assist employees in their self-development efforts. Employees who are growing their skills and responsibilities are a win-win.
  4. Social Good - Companies that strive to contribute to greater social good are focused beyond themselves, develop a better brand, loyal customers, and a sense of reward in contributing to the greater good.
  5. Curiousity, Creativity, and Innovation - They go hand-in-hand. Companies that fall behind on these attributes will stagnate, stumble, and fail to grow.
  6. Diversity - Some may not see this as a goal, per se, but I can attest that working together with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds is a powerful and productive experience! New points of view are far more common, learning to cooperate and appreciate each other is a wonderful opportunity for team and personal growth.
  7. Evaluation and Reflection - Organizations that take time to evaluate their own performance and learn from the study are able to improve and adapt. It is a proactive stance to take, rather than wait for customer complaints to drive corporate improvement, why not identify issues that can be improved before they become an on-going problem?
