Katherine’s Answer

Have a positive attitude and always prepare to learn more. Learning never stops. A good school teaches you the method of learning and prepares you to learn on your own. So the most important things are reading skills, analytical skills and communication skills besides any specific knowledge in the field you are going into. Having the aptitude and curiosity to learn new things can help you in any career you choose to go into.

John’s Answer

TA's answer is great. A SWOT analysis is a little ritual i perform on myself at least annually. It is usually performed when considering making a business move, but it can be tailored to you as a person.

Preparedness is a state of mind mixed with the actions you have taken to achieve a goal or intended result. First, consider what it is you want to accomplish and then consider what it is you need to do (certifications/qualifications/degrees/experience) to market yourself to be desirable in that field and to better your chances of succeeding.

Simeon’s Answer

In general, I recommend going to the department of labor's website to get a sense of the most promising careers. Watch some videos on what people love and hate about those fields. If one resonates with you, do some research on the years of schooling or other prerequisites that you would need to get into that field. I'd also recommend looking at job boards and companies hiring for the career. See if your earlier research on prerequisites matches what the companies say they are looking for in candidates. In general, which school you go to prepare for a field shouldn't affect your long-term course too much outside of law and medicine.

Terence’s Answer

Along with the answers above, being highly adaptive and consistently thinking about what you want from your job/career are pretty important. As you continue to work, you'll find new areas that you may be interested in as you gain more exposure to different jobs, roles, and industries. Learn more about those things, grow and adapt. As you grow your skills, your interests will also evolve. Lastly, industries and the world around us are constantly changing, so being flexible and adapting with it all is an important trait.

In order to build a lasting career path, or change along the way, that willingness to adapt are pretty important as your skills and experience grow. If you're also consistently thinking about your career/job, you would also be in a better place to anticipate major changes, positive or negative. This should help you adapt along the way, or make a pivot to another career that fits your evolved interests. Even if something catches you off-guard with your job, you'll be better suited to make a change if you have a good sense of your skills, interests, and the appetite to change.

Gloria’s Answer

The best thing that you can do to prepare for a specific career is learn as much as you can about it. There is value in learning the best and worst elements of that career and how you will handle those aspects when they come up. For example, depending on who you are, my career as an Instructional Designer can be frustrating because it is often a solo job. It feels a bit like being a coder, where a lot of the hard work is done by you and you alone. I love this element, of being creative for hours on end and on my own.
