You may find different stats pertaining to salary of vet techs. If you are seeking salary for a Licensed Veterinary Technician (passed the National Veterinary Technician Exam and registered in state practicing), then the position should pay more than an unlicensed "vet tech" or veterinary assistant. There are many careers for veterinary support staff. You can even now become a Veterinary Assistant.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER...The Veterinary Medical Comminuty VALUES CREDENTIALED VETERINARY TECHNICIANS and other SUPPORT STAFF. ***HOWEVER, WE NEED TO SEE THE VALUE IN OURSELVES AND EXPECT A SALARY APPROPRIATE FOR OUR COLLEGE DEGREE(S) AND STATE REGISTRATION. ***THEREFORE, DO NOT SETTLE FOR $14-16/hour when you have the knowledge of veterinary knowledge as proven by passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam. ***We have a medical license and must keep up to date with advances through Continuing Education credits, have a Scope of Practice we must follow that is different each state, are practicing under a Veterinarian and therefore liable as well.

I recommend finding your state's veterinary medicial association for technicians/nurses. https://www.navta.net/page/credentialing (National Association of Veterinary Technicians of American) is THE resource to find information for us "CVT/LVT/RVT/VeterinaryNurse" professionals.

As of 02/17/2020, this is the information I found for Iowa from the website: https://www.veterinarianedu.org/iowa-vet-tech/

Job prospects for veterinary technologists and technicians in Iowa are good. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is expected to grow 30% per year through 2022.

Per May 2013 BLS data (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), the average pay throughout the state was $31,140.

Cedar Rapids $32,200
Davenport-Moline-Rock Island (IL) $28,370
Des Moines-West Des Moines $32,230
Omaha-Council Bluffs NE-IA $30,320
Northwest Iowa non-metro area $36,160
Southwest Iowa non-metro area $29,950
Southeast Iowa non-metro area $27,500

Breana recommends the following next steps:

If you are a credentialed Specialist, your salary will increase.
ICU/Emergency/Overnight/Per Diem shifts typically offer higher hourly rates.
House calls usually require higher fees for services/treatments.
