Who would you recommend going into the medical field to?

I'm curious about the medical field in general, however I'm specifically interested in being a nurse midwife.

Richard’s Answer

It is a good field for people who like to read and learn. There are many years of studying in the library on the journey to becoming a physician. After college, medical school and residency physicians still need to keep up to date on latest developments. Being a physician is a lifelong commitment.

You also have to be good at dealing with difficult people. Physicians see people at the lowest points in their life and must understand that patients can take out their frustrations on the doctor and the doctor should not take it personally.

Estelle’s Answer

The field of medicine is incredibly broad, and as such the intensity and commitment vary widely. If you want to be a transplant surgeon, that will be a brutally long and challenging road. It would require decades of your life. However, the time commitment and challenge of a medical assistant and surgical technician are significantly less. The training and commitment are on the scale of months. Decide how important things like prestige, income, and challenges are. Then, decide what field is best for you.

Dedra’s Answer

Being a nurse requires passion to support patients and their families when they are at their most vulnerable. Critical thinking skills are imperative. Always remember, "Know what you don't know." The most competent nurses know when to ask for help or when things are beyond their scope of practice.

Dedra recommends the following next steps:

Apply to volunteer at your local hospital.
Consider working as a certified nursing assistant (requires special training)
Consider working as a unit clerk at your local hospital
