How many hours do you work in a typical week?

I’m a senior at Brennan high school in San Antonio that’s looking for insight on forensic psychology. I wanna be able to work closely with crime and really figure out how someone’s mind works.

Linda Ann’s Answer

I am retired from full time employment, currently.

When I was a faculty member, I worked 50 plus hours per week.

In the government sectors, where I spent much of my career, I typically worked about 40 hours per week; there were occasions with special projects where I worked closer to 50 hours per week.

When I was a traveling school psychologist, I worked a typical 8 hour day; sometimes 4 days per week and sometimes 5 days per week.

Matthew’s Answer

For my position, I typically work anywhere from 40-50 hours a week.

To succeed in the workplace you must understand that you have to fully commit to your job; both in and outside of your office.

It is essentially to practice self introspection at the end of every day, and understand what you must accomplish outside of your work to excel to your best ability.

Matthew recommends the following next steps:

Don't think about how many hours you're logging, and always set a schedule for both inside and outside the office.

Sharonne’s Answer

Currently I work 40 hours a week. In my previous life, I worked over 60 hours a week due to project demands. This was and isn't healthy for anyone. There are times that over 40 hours is necessary.

Sharonne recommends the following next steps:

Create your work-life balance early on in your career so that you won't lose yourself and miss out on various family/friends events.
