Rachel’s Answer

One of the negatives to dermatology is that you may find yourself diagnosing the same skin conditions and performing the same small procedures every day. While some people may view this as comfortable, others may see the lack of variety as monotonous.

Danna,

Any specialty has positives and negatives, it all depends on your interest and passion. I am a dermatologist and I love my profession. Once you get into medical school, you will have the option to rotate through multiple specialties and get a flavor of their day to day. You can start shadowing in college, if you find the time and place that will let you do so. What I like about dermatology is the variety of patients and the practice. You can see kids and adults, do a variety of procedures, including lasers, surgeries, and biopsies, and take care of very impressive rashes and autoimmune diseases. The skin is the largest organ of our body and it is very rewarding to be able to see the problem and it being fixed. I do mostly skin cancers and surgery. Dermatology also allows you to form relationship with your patients. Therefore, it depends on your personality and what interests your.

Estelle’s Answer

My sister is a dermatologist. Dealing with medication prior authorizations and problematic insurance claim issues are a couple of things she does not like. Overall, she loves being a dermatologist and plans to work as long as she is physically and mentally capable.
