Joseph’s Answer

I have two full time jobs. The first depends on the day, like today I only have two patients to see in there homes but this coming Friday I have 8 patients to see. I am normally in each persons house minimum of 25 min and max of 1.5 hour. I have an area of 35 miles so most everyone is within that distance. If I start early say 830 am. I normally get back to the house around 130 pm then I spend another 2 hours charting on everyone. But on days like today I may go to the movies before I come home.

My second job as weekend supervisor starts 5 pm on Friday and goes through 8 am Monday. Now for most part I am home but I have the phones after I make calls to all the hospitals and rehabs we have patients. Then I answer any calls day or night that come in, patient have problems, questions or concerns. I supervise 3 great ladies and yes sometime if its super busy I will go out and even see a patient, but that's not normal. I monitor a system called Home Health Monitor where our heart patients weigh in before 10 am daily. I receive labs that nurses have drawn and call appropriate MD. I receive online fax from hospitals or rehabs on new referrals to see if they are appropriate for us to take. Then if they are home I send one of the nurses out the next day to do admission. All during the weekend I write report, which normally is about 23 pages long. Some of this includes the reports the nurses send me and other is what happened, who I talked to and what about, I also chart in the patients chart about the same thing.

Ashley’s Answer

A full time job for a floor nurse usually consists of 3 twleve hour shifts per week. Now that I have kids I am working part time. Usually 1-2 12 hour shifts a week. There is also alot of potential to work overtime and to pick up an extra shift! Ovetime shifts are great if you are paying off student loans or want to save a little extra money. Nursing is wonderful because there are so many opportunities and it can be very flexible!
