An Art Teacher can be a very fulfilling role for a career. With the high cost of living in so many areas, this career may require relocating to a less expensive area in order to provide for your home. Teaching art can run the gamut from preschool to a MFA. Focus on which ages you are most compelled to provide instruction to. Art opens up the world and really makes sense out of incongruities.

Teaching art is teaching empowerment. Helping students to understand art history, composition, perspective and different mediums allows them to gain the tools they will need to express. This is providing a great life coping skill. It is also possible to teach marketing, sales and how to gain access to galleries. It also teaches how to use their eyes so that they see thing differently.

A former student of mine has a lucrative career in gaming development.

It is also possible to open a studio where you provide more individualized lessons. This could adapt to other life concerns such as caregiving an elder or rearing children.

After 50 years as an educator I discovered that teaching art is one of the best career options in the field. However in some ways is the worst.

It’s the worst because it requires a lot of hard work. Organizing materials, cleaning up, responding to the varied needs of students, can leave you exhausted. On top of that teachers have to respond to the administrative demands of schools. It’s a tough job.

It’s the best when you see the creative abilities of kids who you have challenged. It’s satisfying to realize how much you can encourage students. It’s meaningful when a proud parent tells you that your teaching has made a significant impact on their child. And it’s just plain fun when you play with the kids you teach.
