Essentially, syntax is the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a Language.
Examples of Syntax in a Sentence:
The boy jumped happily.
The boy happily jumped.

If your question is in regards to a programming language, it is similar to spelling and grammar. If you make a mistake while writing a program you will encounter an error, just like using an incorrect word in a sentence. For a program to run, it has to be syntactically correct, for it to perform well its semantics (logic) needs to be correct.
