Thank you comment icon Although this is a good definition of the word confidence, Brenda was curious about confidentiality. As a nurse, what does it mean to you and how do you ensure confidentiality with your patients? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Baraka’s Answer

Confidentiality is the principle that information shared between two parties should not be shared with anyone else without the consent of both parties. In the context of healthcare, confidentiality means that a healthcare provider should not share information about a patient with anyone else, unless the patient has given their consent. This includes sharing information with family members, friends, or other healthcare providers. Confidentiality is an important principle because it helps to build trust between patients and healthcare providers. It also helps to protect the privacy and dignity of patients.

Hwal’s Answer

Brenda,

It looks like you're interested in working in medicine. To me, confidentiality in the world of medicine reminds us to be very careful with accessing, using, sharing, and disposing of information related to patients (e.g., date of birth, full name, diagnosis). In essence, I practice confidentiality by handling protected health information as if it was my own.

confidentiality in this field means that a person's personal health information in respected, and kept private or secret...it is only shared with the person's permission and written consent or agreement. There are exceptions according to law called HIPPA which stands for health information portability act...with technology it is easy for information to move but still requires privacy to be respected....times the law allows for it to happen without permission that is common would be in a medical emergency, if there might be child abuse or neglect and if there was an actual court order from a judge.

Ryan’s Answer

My definition of confidentiality, in regards to medicine, is derived directly from the definition of privacy provided by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, which reads:

"[The] major goal of [privacy] is to assure that individuals’ health information is properly protected while allowing the flow of health information needed to provide and promote high quality health care and to protect the public's health and well being. [Privacy] strikes a balance that permits important uses of information, while protecting the privacy of people who seek care and healing. Given that the health care marketplace is diverse, [privacy] is designed to be flexible and comprehensive to cover the variety of uses and disclosures that need to be addressed."

Or, in my own words, confidentiality is the right of an individual to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally safe and secure while sharing sensitive personal information with healthcare providers.
