The Accounting field has a variety of areas that you can specialize in. My suggestion to you is to read up on the Accounting field, if you have not chosen your major yet and try to speak with professors and/or real-world accountants to see if it is something you could see yourself doing. As I said, it is a very large field, with a variety of areas, such as general accounting, internal/external reporting, FP&A, auditing, taxation, partnership, governmental, etc... (You see, there are a lot of areas) If it is something you decide to pursue, participate in Internships over the summers. Internships will often let you work with the accountants and daily tasks, giving you a feel for what they do. Try to get an internship in a company that you are interested in. There are many opportunities to get into the field and obtain further certifications, like your CPA, CMA, etc. Research these as well. in my career thus far, I have worked in various areas including general ledger accounting (posting JEs, accruals, and such), FP&A, Project Accounting and Internal Reporing. My career has given me opportunities and I've taken them. Don't limit yourself and do a little research. Talk to your professors, see if they have contacts you can speak with for 20-30 minutes and ask them questions about their jobs and day-to-day tasks. It's a great field and definitely worth exploring a little more!

Agree with above answers and STRONGLY RECOMMEND starting your career at a public accounting firm after graduation (interning is even better) as it provides a well-rounded base and opens several career path options.

Rose’s Answer

You do not have to choose a career now. In fact, you may go down several career paths after college, before finding something you really love to do. I will caution you that it is difficult to go into auditing and taxation later in life, as the foundational skills are gained by working long hours for relatively low pay. If you think you want to be a CPA in assurance, look to work in public accounting immediately after graduation.
