Kelsey,

As someone actively seeking jobs currently I can tell you with all certainty that there is demand for individuals with food science degrees. You can check job demand based on national statistics by the labor bureau --> http://www.bls.gov/ ... Of course when considering what type of work you'd like to do, also try to take into consideration all variables; would you like to work in R&D, in a manufacturing setting, or in an office? Would you want to work on flavoring, product development, process implementation, or something altogether different? What makes you want to go into food science as a major? Always make sure to ask such fundamental questions of yourself when choosing your career path as there may be another degree that will prove to be more interesting to you but still allow you to work inside the food/beverage industry if that is your passion.

Best of luck!
-Matt

There is a high demand for those that work in the Food Sciences. Most of the jobs I see are in quality assurance and product development. However, there are many other options such as sales, auditing, sensory, lab (microbiology or chemistry) regulatory, marketing, and operations. There are also many jobs with the government that can be found on www.usajobs.gov. I encourage you to check out IFT’s Employment & Salary Survey Report. You can usually find an older version for free if you google it. I also highly encourage you to visit https://www.ift.org/career-development/learn-about-food-science/careers-in-food-science.

Thomas’s Answer

As a recent graduate from Food Science I can say with certainty that there is a high demand for work in the industry. If you analyse trends in the food sector you will see increased consumer demands, tighter quality control and exponential population growth which means greater output is required.
It is important to learn as much as you can about the food industry as you can from internships. These give you a great understanding of how the industry works and this knowledge is what employers will look for in interviews. Food scientists will work in labs, as quality analysts, process technicians, operators, researchers, marketers etc.
