I have a computer science degree so I can't speak about computer engineering. I think a computer science degree opens the door for many options. My first job out of college with a CS degree was a programmer. I quickly learned in the business world that the role of a data analyst was more up my alley. I had no idea this type of work even existed and was sought after by companies. Once I decided programming wasn't for me long term, I went back to school for an MBA with an emphasis in Management Information systems. This opened up many doors to a career outside of programming. I guess my point is don't feel you have to make the perfect decision on your career right after you receive your degree in CS. The field is very large and you will find out what is the right decision for you if you keep an open mind.

Hi Carmen M. Thanks so much for your question. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

The good news is that with a major in computer engineering and/or computer science, and of course successfully graduating with that major, your career path would be pretty close to limitless. I graduated from college many many years ago, with an engineering degree. Today, I still use a lot of those engineering principles in my career. My career has moved from an engineering role, to a sales role, to a marketing role. I know many people who have moved into environmental fields, research fields, have moved to start-up businesses, more established companies or have decided to work for a college or university.

Why so much variety? It is because the skill set that comes with a computer engineering and/or computer science degree, includes exposure to the skill set of programming. Some college/university curricula expose students to different programming languages which helps to sharpen the programming skill set. In general terms, being able to program a tool to do repetitive tasks, can be invaluable in helping individuals and team to make good decisions and make progress where it is most needed.

Good luck!
