What are the best scholarships for international students as a Class of '24 incoming freshman?

I am a South African student who will be attending an American state university in the fall. However, due to laws that prevent my university from providing me with aid because I am an international student, I might struggle to pay to attend. I really do not want to use large loans as a solution because of the chances of incurring huge amounts of debt. Any advice or scholarship suggestions that could help last minute? #college #scholarship #student #financial-planning #financial-aid

If you are accepted to the University, I think you are able to contact your international advisor(Or already did). They will be the best on answering this question. There will be specific scholarships that will be able to international students. Also there are options of working on campus. Try to talk with your international advisor about your plan and situation, and they will be glad to help you with the best answers.

Hi Pearl,

Some scholarships for college are merit-based. You earn them by meeting or exceeding certain standards set by the scholarship-giver. Merit scholarships might be awarded based on academic achievement or on a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, or interest. Other scholarships are based on financial need. You can learn about scholarships in several ways, including contacting the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend and checking information in a public library or online.

Hi Pearl,

First off, huge congrats on studying in the fall! I wish you the best of luck in your new journey. I personally had the exact opposite experience as you, I was an American student who got a scholarship through the Rotary Foundation to get my post-grad degree at University of Cape Town. I had a wonderful time as an international student and hope you will to.

It's great that you are not looking for loans and are looking for scholarships, I think that is the way to go. I did a quick search on google and found a pretty comprehensive list of resources that might be useful to you. Read through and see what applies to you.

Pam’s Answer

Hello Pearl,

One of the best sources of scholarship information is the academic department of your major at the university you will be attending. Contact your dean's office and inquire about scholarships related to your major. Additionally, you can contact professional associations related to your major.

Hope that helps.
