In what ways is a Master in Finance better than an MBA in the financial services industry?

In what ways can a Master in Finance be of greater use than an MBA with respect to career opportunities, climbing the corporate ladder and overall compensation in the financial services industry? I received my undergraduate degree in Economics and minored in communication studies. I currently work for a private company in the financial services industry and I'm currently pursuing a Master in Finance. #finance #masters #corporate

I think it depends on a couple of factors. First MBA has a better brand particularly in the US. Outside the US there is less weight applied to brand of MBA and perhaps more emphasis on the technical. So if you are trying to climb corporate ladder in the US i would say you would be better off with MBA. If you are however looking for a very technical role and want to tailor a program to that then a masters in finance is the way to go. Depending on the school you choose you can take some of the MBA electives or take the MBA and do finance electives and get the best of both worlds. I think over riding MBA v MIF is the school you choose. A masters in finance from a top 10 is going to carry more weight than an MBA from a top 30 school for instance.

Christan’s Answer

Similar to the above, In countries outside the US most firms would prefer a Masters of Finance vs an MBA it's just how the rest of the world sees things. E.g. in Australia and Germany it's not really known to get an MBA if you want to go to a Investment Bank or financial services firm, rather people would question why didn't you do a MFin?

If you went to a very good school for an MBA that would elicit a different response.
