Ellen’s Answer

That depends on several factors. How committed are you to your art? What kind of lifestyle do you envision for yourself? Are you happy to take risks, or do you want a secure future? Going into the fine arts field can be a difficult road; there is lots of competition and the chances of striking it rich are pretty slim, but still there. Many artists need to have "day jobs" to support themselves. I found that teaching art was a great way to combine my love of art and art making with making a decent living. As an art teacher, a lot of your time is spent planning lessons and teaching, but you are immersed in art everyday. Having the summers off to concentrate on your art is a real plus. If you like teaching and like working with children of all ages or with adults, then combining a fine arts degree with a teaching degree might be a way forward for you.

randy’s Answer

I was taught never make art for money.. Holds true for me.
I am a working artist and have been many years.( no degree ) However I apprenticed in a formal setting.7+7 years in a fine art studio / art foundry. I did attend several higher ed facility great place for resources back in the day.
Doing the math, I have now been making and selling my art for forty four years. Art in Public / Corporate / Private
So can you have a rewarding career without a degree ? Yes

However.
MY mentor and most of my friends / peers are lettered and it is my view they have done well by doing so.They often speak highly of that time and have at at least one instructor/ prof they will never forget . Most seem to appreciate the opportunity they had to grow and develop in a structured environment.
So on the degree side. My friends all say Yes

That degree / knowledge is the tool used to build a body of work. How you grow and develop that vocabulary may differ.
The work is what matters when judged and judged it shall be.
.

Yes get the degree be an artist
Good Luck Have Fun.

Craig’s Answer

I guess it depends on what you mean by "worth". I worked for 35 years in the automotive and defense industries and made art in my spare time. I have a BA in English and an MFA in Painting. I am now retired and spend a majority of time making art and working on my art practice. If you can not find a job having to do with art, the degree still helps greatly if you decide to pursue other job opportunities. If art is your passion you can still make time for it no matter what you do in everyday life. Getting any job with thousands of potential companies usually requires a degree no matter what field it's in. The degree shows you had the energy and fortitude to go to school to improve yourself and prepare for the working world. No matter what degree you decide to pursue, try to be sure it is in something you love and have passion for. I say try because at College age many people do not know what they want to pursue in life. If you are lucky enough to know what you love and want to do; that is a distinct advantage.
