Hi Amani,

I don't think you need to a great drawer to become a graphic designer as everyone got difference drawing style.

As you are in New York, you can go to Apple Store to join the free section of Today at Apple for learning some basic skills.

I do not think it is a requirement, but I think it can be a big plus. If you are able to draw, it can help you communicate your ideas better when you are in the early phases of concepting a project. It can also be a plus to be able to create your own illustrations if you do not have access to a stock website, or cannot find exactly what you need on a stock website. I think being able to have a solid drawing/fine art background as a designer will always vary from job to job, but I think it will always be a point in your favor no matter where you apply!

For me personally, I create a lot of art in my personal and professional creating in Photoshop (through digital painting) and Illustrator (through vector drawings), as well as watercolors, pen/ink/pencil, and acrylic paint.

Practice makes perfect, and creativity/drawing is a muscle that can be strengthened with regular practice :) Even if you pick something once a day to draw for 10 minutes or an hour, it can help you develop and hone your skills/style.

Hey Amani,

Thank you for your question. It is not necessary to be good at drawing if you are interested in graphic design. Graphic design is created and combined by symbols, images as well as text and representing ideas and messages.

In my point of view, you should be able to use symbols and words to express the ideas and messages, this is the basic requirement at least. You may practice more with your friends or peers, and get some feedbacks from them. Then, the design techniques could be your next development. Photoshop, AI, ProCreate, etc, try to get more familiar with those applications, and pick one be your advantage. There are many different fields in graphic design, for example, visual design/ marketing and advertising/ packaging/ art and illustration... Once you have your own style, you may be easier to choose your path of career.

Being good at drawing would help for sure, or you could refer more articles/ works from internet, or attend the exhibitions nearby.

Good luck, mate.

Hi Amani,

I am not a graphic designer, but I have friends who are. And among them, some are great drawers, while others are not. Similar to another answer, if you are a good drawer, it certainly helps. It could be an additional strength to your work, and help convey your message, your ideas more creatively. It gives you more freedom to conceptualize your ideas and illustrate them. For a friend who is a book cover designer, he gets the most of his work out of his own art, rather than using the tools that are available. So, knowing how to draw is a big plus for him.

However, it is not a must. I have a couple of friends, both in web designing industry who are successful graphic designers without being good at drawing. They have a bunch of softwares and tools at their disposal, that they have good a grasp on, and use it to get the desired results. Similarly, for other similar graphic design areas like graphic and logo, layout and print, mobile and web, etc., you can leverage the tools that are in the market to portray the designs without having to be a great drawer.

McKenzie’s Answer

As others have said, some graphic designers are great at drawing, and it can help, but it is absolutely not a requirement! If you lack in drawing skills, I would recommend mastering an editing program so that you can express your ideas easily and neatly. One example is Photoshop, but there are a ton out there and everyone has their own preference. I would recommend doing trials on a few of them, watching some starter YouTube videos to get accustomed to the interface, and then make a decision on which you would like to work on before purchasing the full version. Work on projects for yourself, your friends, and school in that program to learn new skills!

Tsui Ying’s Answer

Hey there, that's a great question. I would say you don't have to be a great drawer to be a graphic designer. If you have basic drawing skills and a great imagination then you can get quite far. A lot of graphic designers are involved in website making, which aims at branding and with branding typography and pictures is involved. If you can familiarise yourself with Illustrator, InDesign, CorelDraw & Photoshop then that is a good start. Also, graphic designers often work with a wider team and they too will be able to provide drawing assistance.
