Hello,

Great question. I too love English and would love nothing more to do it all day.

A PhD in a relevant field will allow you to apply for jobs that research and lecture at universities. Please note these are very competitive.

With a PhD in literature you will be able to teach in a High School, write articles and books, and work in non for profits. Depending on what type of specialization you took would change your job prospects.

I hope this helps.

PhDs are really useful in the corporate world, too. PhDs also take a lot of time/money/energy/dedication to get, so really think about what you want. What is it about being a professor that really appeals to you? Do those aspects exist elsewhere in other professions?
The academic world is not an easy place to be these days - as a grad student or as a professor. There are very few jobs in the humanities. Being an adjunct get really hard really fast. I left academia recently for the corporate world. Just some food for thought.

Hi Elizabeth,

I only got a Bachelors in English, but I wanted to share some information about a specific career that's relevant to an English degree: User Experience Content Designer (also sometimes called a User Experience Writer). When I was an English major in college, I didn't know this career existed, and it took me a few years to find it while working in the corporate environment. In this role, you work with User Experience Designers (the individuals who build out features for an application), and you review the content in those features, such as warning messages, dropdown menu content, etc. At my company, we also write help articles for our Support Center that guide customers on how to use a feature; at other companies this is typically a separate role (Technical Writer).

Hopefully these specific job examples related to the tech world are helpful for you. Best of luck!
