Tia’s Answer

Hi Vanisha,

I always knew I wanted to help people and work in the health care field, just didnt' know what area. In high school, I had the opportunity to participated in various medical career internships and programs to learn more about the health profession. In college I majored in Biology and also had the opportunity to participated in summer internships related to health care. However, I really enjoyed general and organic chemistry and actually served as a college tutor in both subjects for 2 years. These experiences plus my interest in chemistry helped me decide to choose my career in pharmacy. At first, I was hesitant to choose pharmacy but I researched the pharmacy profession and realized pharmacists are more than just in the retail pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS) I felt comfortable choosing the right career choice. Hope this helps!

Karen A.’s Answer

I was painfully shy when I was in high school. I didn't want to be painfully shy the rest of my life. So I went into sales. I was able to land entry level positions without a college degree (which I did later attain). But more importantly, I literally thought that going into sales would FORCE me to learn how to talk to people! And it definitely did. Even better, it ended up being my career. I moved up into business to business sales which is a respectable position. There is a saying in the sales profession: If you can sell, you will never be out of work. I am not talking about the stereotypical used car salesman type of hard selling. In business, I consult with my clients to see what they are trying to solve, and propose solutions from my company's offerings.

Tequila’s Answer

Hello. I initially did not want to become a nurse. What I knew about nurses when I was in high school was that they seemed subservient to doctors. I saw how they stood up when doctors came around, even giving up their seats for them on a hospital unit. I learned this from watching TV shows. When I went to college the first time, it wasn't for nursing. I decided to become a nurse the second time around was because I spoke to a nursing professor and had a conversation about the profession. I was both surprised and excited about the profession. The variety, the ability to work anywhere I wanted to live, and the teaching aspect of the profession. I like teaching but don't like the low wages teachers were making at that time. I also have a healthy lifestyle, so learning more about the science behind maintaining a healthy lifestyle intrigued me too. With nursing, as a second career, I was able to check off most of my "must have" boxes.
Mostly important to me, because I'm such an independent purpose, I like the autonomy.
