What specific field should I go into if I eventually want to branch off on my own and start to design my own car engines?

After college I plan to gain experience hopefully by, working side by side with today's top performance car designers. Once I soak up any information they can give me, I want to branch off and design my own performance car parts. #engineer #mechanical #designers #car

Hi Mylik,

Modern engines are a high-tech venture, and commercial car parts involve as much cutting-edge manufacturing design as individual parts. You may want to think about what aspects of car parts you want to build:
* Precision-manufactured parts (Industrial, Systems, Materials, and Mechanical engineering are relevant)
* Custom parts from a small machine shop for a few customers (Mechanical engineering and hands-on experience are most relevant)
* Experimental parts for a big company's concept cars (Automotive, Mechanical, Aero engineering, with up to a PhD)
* Experimental engines for fundamental research at a university (A PhD in Mechanical engineering would be relevant)
* Running a business that makes engines (hands-on experience and business skills are most relevant)

There is a whole world of possibilities, even inside of just car engine manufacture. My best wisdom for you is get involved with a club, part time job, or hobby and immerse yourself in your subject of choice. You'll learn what you like, what seems hard, and what you wish you knew more about.

One can learn much from any field. I would suggest something in mechanical engineering, combined with computer science. Also I cannot strongly enough recommend getting your hands in experience with engines and other car parts. Understanding the physical nature is very important.
Good luck!
