If you are in this career field, looking at where you are now and how you started. What would you have done differently?

I am 17 and I have been around horses for 11 years. I have volunteered working at a barn, I have taken horse back riding lessons for 11 years. I worked at a barn cleaning draft horse stalls and stacking hay, I am also currently working 5 days a weeks at a barn caring for and working the horses. I am passionate about horses and couldn't imagine doing anything else! One day I hope to have my own business with massage therapy for horses. #horselife #horsegirl #massagetherapy #business

I think understanding mental models would be something I wish I knew when I was younger. Mental models are frameworks you can build in your mind to solve problems or find answers. https://fs.blog/knowledge-project/ The knowledge project is a great free resource to learn more about mental models. If you are looking to learn more about the Horse industry you can start talking to people with the mental framework or model to have conversations related to business. "I am really interested in horses from a personal perspective but Id love to learn more the business of horses. Tell me how you got started in the horse business?" "What can I do to be successful in this industry?"

Also, make a habit out of asking open ended questions like you did for this post. They will get you more information that you can imagine.

Hopefully this was helpful.

Joe’s Answer

When I was in college, I heard of a relatively new area of study called MIS, Management Information Systems in the mid-1990's that I wish I would have been more curious about and taken some classes in, since that is what I do now and would have possibly had a better start to finding jobs early on in that field to build on my skills. Instead, I studied communications, which was good since I don't have any fears of speaking in public, but I struggled to find work in something I was gifted at and enjoyed. I had many positions I learned from, but did not necessarily enjoy and motivated me to find something different.

That motivation kept me driven to try things where eventually after my 3rd company and 3rd position at a good employer I was introduced to databases and SQL code and scripts, where I could see the fun you can have with design and producing code that provided reports and information to managers for making better decisions for driving the business. I have held numerous roles since then and continue to learn and build my skills even to this day. The funny thing about jobs and careers, that in order to grow, you need to keep learning. Even after getting your degree, you are not done. I eventually received my Masters' after my bachelors', but I am still not done. I still continue to need new skills in order to help my company with our goals and objectives and make things better.

Remember you can't go back and change the past, but you are in charge of your future, so try things out and fail at something so you can learn and grow. Also, if want you do make you feel happy and you are gifted in that area, you are probably on the right path.

Best of luck!
