Hi Aimee,

Having recruited Account Managers for many years I can tell you that the personality trait that stands out to me the most is enthusiasm. Particularly when looking at a Graduate Account Manager with little or no experience. Being positive, eager to learn, adaptable, personable, communicative and innovative are all characteristics I would look for in a Graduate Account Manager.

If you want to excel in any organisation as an Account Manager you need to be knowledgeable in your area of business, products/services and industry. You need to be very customer focused and have the ability to build strong relationships with your clients. Being an excellent communicator will go a long way, it will help you to present to customers, build rapport, lead phone conversations and close deals. You need to be confident but not over-confident, results driven but not pushy and have the ability to achieve yours and your company's targets and goals.

I hope this helps you.

Regards,
Katie

Hi,
That is a great question. I think it depends on the type of company you work for and the job description/expectations. Account Manager (AM) is one of those job titles that can mean a lot of things...some AM jobs involve sales, quotas and making calls all day trying to find new business while others are more directed to actually managing accounts, customer service and helping customers with problems, issues, etc. The more sales related AM jobs will require an outgoing, extroverted personality...the more management related AM jobs can be done by anyone that has the ability and desire. Example, I worked as an Account Manager/Inside Sales Rep for a large computer company in Texas for over 10 years and the job is mixed and split between sales and actually managing accounts...the majority of people in the Inside Sale role are outgoing, extroverted but there were a small % of us that were introverts and did well in the job also.
Hope this helps...good luck! :)
