Thomas’s Answer

"To start, an aspiring pediatrician must obtain a four-year degree with a pre-med set of classes. These are usually eight different classes that cover basic subjects such as Organic Chemistry and Anatomy. These classes must be taken in addition to or as part of a Bachelor’s degree, but the Bachelor’s degree can be in any field. Because each pre-med student will have to apply for medical school, however, it is generally recommended that the Bachelor’s degree is somehow related to their future studies. In the case of pediatricians, a degree in Child Development, Child Psychology, or any type of medical related science such as Chemistry or Biology are good choices. Liberal Arts degrees such as English used to be very common, but as more people have competed for dwindling medical school spots, students have tended not to choose these types of degrees."

Hi Raina! To be a pediatrician you have to go to 4 years of college and obtain a Bachelor's as well as 4 years of medical school and then residency (where you are a doctor in training but are receiving pay). That being said, you can be any major and apply to medical school; I was a psychology major. The important thing is to take the prerequisites required for medical school like biology, chemistry, physics, etc., as well as show your passion for the medical field by volunteering and shadowing a physician. Usually traditional majors like Biology or Biochemistry can expose you more to the harder science classes required for medical school but other majors like Psychology, Sociology (which is also tested on the MCAT) are also helpful. There is much diversity in medical school therefore when picking a major it is important to see what it offers for medicine as well as if it is something that interests you; especially if you choose a non traditional major this may be asked during an interview!

I wish you the best!

Loni’s Answer

A pediatrician is a medical specialty, so you must first graduate from medical school before going on to specialize in the field of pediatrics. Pediatricians need to complete four years of college, four years of medical school, and then three years in an accredited residency program for pediatricians.

You can have a bachelorettes degree in anything; however, degrees in science would be best suited to becoming a pedicatrician. You will need to have the premedical school course requirements completed when applying to medical school and score well on the Medical College Admission Tes (MCAT). As answered above, a degree in science (like biology) or child development, child psychology are good choices.
