[closed] How do managers who lead cope with different competing demands for attention?

Hello,

I am a business senior in college seeking some information about the typical mindset of a manager who handles different attentive needs of the area that s/he is working in. My associate's degree is in administration, and my concentration is in management. In addition, I have a slight preference in learning more in management. There are different things, tasks, and people that compete with your attention in the workplace. How do you go about setting up a system to get the most done with the best outcomes and intentions? There are different motives and intentions, as well as different personalities of people to work and liv with.

Thank you. #business #business-administration #leadership #office-management #time-management

Hi,

First of all I would like to wish you all the best with your career choice.

Coming to your question, it is always important to understand and analyze two major parts of your job.
1. Challenges of your role
2. People/Stakeholders

Firstly, lets talk about the challenges we as managers/leaders face and how we overcome the same.
Some of challenges can be related to the following aspects:
- Knowledge
- People
- Product
- Environment

It is important for the manager to spend enough time to understand his challenges and draw up action plans to overcome them.

What I do personally is spend time with SMEs (Subject Matter Specialists) to understand the nitty-gritties of the business and improve on my process knowledge and increase my capability to answer questions related to my process. Some issues would still be uncontrollable at a manager level (For ex. Product, Environment, etc.) . Based on the knowledge I would be acquiring I would draw up plans on how to improve it (and it helps you to look at it in different ways than the SMEs) and make it better and improve efficiency.
Also, I use Time management to draw up schedule to help me prioritize my people vs my tasks.

Bigger challenge is People.
Yes, each individual is different. They have different personalities, motives, intentions, attention needs, etc. & that is the best part of being a manager or a leader. To be able to lead a group of individuals with so much variety towards a common goal. Its a challenge that I consider as passion. How do I do it? Well, I have formal and informal ways of handling situations or people. I would drive efficiency, collaboration, time management, ethical approach & also set right expectations. People should understand best outcomes are achieved not as an individual but as a team by doing right things in the right way.
