If you're interested in working in government, I would recommend looking at the job postings in your local city, state, and federal government agencies. Government is wide reaching but the process to become a government employee takes a very long time. You can do anything in government. My husband works as a researcher for the Department of Defense as a civilian. There are jobs in every field you can imagine so it would be very easy for you to pursue finance/accounting as a major and utilize these skills in a government job.

I recommend government internships to get your foot in the door.

I wish you the best of luck!

An accounting or finance degree is a pretty safe bet for getting into one of these fields. Plus, these degrees have pretty broad applications, so you have many more options when looking for the job that would be the best fit for you.

It is safe to say that a degree in accounting or finance will be a good choice, but the decision is up to you. Looking at job options with those requirements would help your in your decision process.
One way to get into a government job is to start your path in a accounting or financial degree and then join the armed forces as an officer. Most jobs that are out there require education and experience. As an officer you can commission into a job that you want to do in the future.
The benefits from the service will set you up to gain experience in your field and your personal life.

Sami’s Answer

Working in Government Finance would require a college major in Finance, Public Finance, Accounting, Auditing, Economics, General Business.
These kind of majors can also help you find more job opportunities other than the public sector, i.e. you can end up working for a multinational firm.

Agreed. A degree in accounting or something related will open doors in government and also the private sector. You can always go back and forth if you'd like. And agreed that the best way to figure out what degree makes the most sense is to look at job postings for entry-level positions and see what they are asking for. Local and state governments all have their own hiring portals and all federal government hiring is done through usajobs.gov. I can only speak to federal jobs, but the way it works is that you can qualify for jobs with a combination of experience and education. Many jobs require a college degree and most specialized jobs require experience or education in that field. Frankly, the degree really only gets you in the door. After your first job, what degree, what school, and what GPA you have doesn't come up much unless you are trying to get into a specific field. You should also try internships . It's easier to get hired if you already have a connection there, it's a way to see how the field actually works, and you can learn about what interests you.
