Donald’s Answer

One of the hardest challenges I faced while using my creative talents would honestly be the jealousy of other people who wanted to be creative. I can respect formal training it is important to teach us the basics of any career choice however creative talents are something created in people's life. I believe that being an Art Director can also put the stress of having to manage a team of different personalities while being cost aware to budgets and deadlines.I do believe if you enjoy your work and the company you are with the positive will out weigh any negative situation. Lead by example with your work ethics, attitude and dedication and hopefully that will keep hardships down and productivity up

Terry’s Answer

Hi Coey,

I will attempt to answer this for you, even though I have never been an art director.

To the best of my knowledge, there are two types of art directors. One is the person who works in an advertising agency. They oversee the designers of campaigns. The other is the person who works on a film or TV show. They are part of the production design. Both, I imagine, would face similar hardships. For example:

1. The challenge of interpreting the client or director's vision. Collaboration can sometimes be effortless, but often it is more of a challenge.
2. Creative frustration that your design, concept, direction is not liked by your boss or, the worse, the client.
3. The hours to prepare a concept, pitch, or complete the work can often take long hours, so sometimes the pay isn't up to par.

I hope this helps. I would find an art director on the internet, maybe on LinkedIn, and ask if you can interview them. Often professionals are not only flattered but wish to help younger people break into the business and are happy to give advice.

Good luck!
