How do I write a story that has more of an impact on people?

I've been writing a little bit every now and then, and I want to know if there's anyway to convey more emotion through the story. #writing

Rebecca’s Answer

I can think of 3 aspects below :
1. Writing Techniques - You can learn some writing techniques online. The most important is you practise more. Practise makes perfect. You can try to write more stories.
2. Story Background - You may need to design story background like time, venue and characters, etc. You may need to more research.
3. Attractiveness of the Story - This is the most important how your story structure to attract the audience, e.g. how the characters interact with one another, their emotions, what challenges or advantages they encounter, etc.
I suggest you try to write more and share with more people to obtain their feedback. It can help to improve.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Fernando’s Answer

It all starts with themes and characters. What are the themes you want to explore that people can relate to? Who are the characters that are exploring these themes and why are they doing so or how are they doing so? First step is to make a list of ideas that you want to explore, then narrow it down the ones you feel confident in writing. After that research a bit more into these ideas and the various forms they can show up in life. If you can draw from personal experience that's a bonus.

As for the characters, first think of the setting this will help you to create a character that better fits the world. Afterwards comes the hard part which is making the character's personality and goals. Take your time and think of how the themes of the story relate to the character and how it ties into the characters wants and needs.

Brandon’s Answer

That depends on the overall message that you want to convey to the audience and how it is executed. A lot of the time when I read other works from other writers that try to have an "impact", they over value the message and strictly write in a way that is very straight to the point and focuses solely on that single message. While there are many ways that you CAN write it all depends on how you want to execute it. If I were to recommend something, I would say to plan out the entire story, or at least a large chunk of the beginning so that you know how you want to write the initial draft of the story. After that, you have planned everything out then you try and make the specific idea you have in mind have the impact that you desire.

Tyler’s Answer

Hey Sean,

No. 1: Ask questions. A lot of questions. It's one of the only true ways to understand a subject matter or individual enough to write something that is extremely powerful. Some of the best stories ever written were rich in detail and the only way you get that detail is through asking questions.

Think of the questions as bottles of paint and the answers are the actual paint. Once the paint is out of the bottle, you just need to use your brush and illustrate it the best way possible. That's where your voice comes in the most and being able to discern which answers go where and how to convey them.

Marcia’s Answer

As you write the story, try to imagine how you would feel if you were going through that experience, maybe even for the very first time and make note of everything you may have observed through all of your senses (i.e. what did it look like? what did it feel like? etc.).

Marcia recommends the following next steps:

If you've not experienced what you're sharing yourself, then ask others you may know that have experienced it and ask them to describe what it was like.

Nathaniel’s Answer

1. Become as clear and knowledgeable about your audience as possible. Who are you writing for? What do they care about? Can you identify publications this audience reads? What can you observe about the content/tone of such publications?

2. When you've identified your subject, become as clear and knowledgeable about it as you can. Track down all the details lurking at the edges. The writer needs to know what details have to go into the story and which should be left out, which means that s/he has to know a lot more than s/he eventually publishes.

3. Become as clear and knowledgeable about why you want to tell a particular story as about why your audience might want to know it. Why is it important for you to tell it just now? Why is it important for your audience to hear it just now.

4. Write well and clearly. The standard formula for 'informational' writing is: provide a thumbnail that will identify the subject and attract the reader's interest; clearly lay out the details and the supporting evidence; end with a summary statement and a suggestion for what to do next (get more information, contact someone, form or join a group, etc.).

Nathaniel recommends the following next steps:

If the story is exciting/interesting to you, find out who else might be excited by it and write it for them.
