It depends on how you define a comfortable life. In my experience, the most comfortable people in the world are those who have found a fulfilling life. There is a book called, "Do What You Love And The Money Will Follow". That about sums it up. There are those who have high-paying salaries, but live a very uncomfortable life, even with material and monetary wealth. And there are those that have very little material or monetary wealth, yet they lead very fulfilling lives. The latter often achieve exceptional salaries throughout their career while living life to the fullest. The former often achieve high salaries at the cost of being unfulfilled in their career and life.
