“While New York has always been the hub for major marketing, advertising and public relations corporations, it is fast becoming home to many burgeoning tech start-ups and new media companies,” says Mike Steinerd, director of recruiting at Indeed. “Essential to the success of these ‘Silicon Alley’ companies is their ability to attract and hire marketing professionals across the board.”

The most common job titles among the open positions: marketing manager, marketing coordinator, marketing intern, director of marketing, and digital marketing manager.

JPMorgan Chase, which has about 17 marketing-related job openings right now, is looking for a marketing communications manager, a marketing associate, a global marketing project manager, and a marketing specialist.

Cosmetic giants Coty, Inc. and Estée Lauder Companies currently have about 14 and 12 marketing job listings in New York City, respectively. Coty, the beauty product manufacturer known primarily for its fragrances is hiring e-Commerce marketing specialists, global marketing directors, a U.S. marketing manager, and a marketing administrative assistant.

But don’t fret if you live outside of New York and aren’t willing to relocate. Other big and bright firms are doing heavy hiring on the West Coast, in the Midwest, and our nation’s capital, as well.

In total, Oakland, Calif. employers are looking to fill 1,140 marketing positions, putting this city in the No. 2 spot. The types of jobs employers are looking to fill in Oakland include product marketing manager, marketing coordinator, public relations manager, and marketing analyst, among others.

Indeed says the overall hiring environment is still slow, but marketers who possess the new skills employers demand, like search engine marketing and emerging media skills, will have greater opportunities.

Hope this helps in getting idea of how one can have flourishing career in marketing.

All the best, do well.

Regards,
Archana Jain

Abgour’s Answer

Hello there,

Just like James said, it has different facets that I can sum up into two: strategy and operations. Strategic marketing is all about predicting and studying your potential costumers’ behavior to your future product/service, their needs, the factors impacting their behavior, and you do all of that through the analysis of a lot of data, using different mathematical and statistical tools to define your strategy (I personally find that to be the coolest part). The Operational marketing is, simply put, the tactic that you adopt to apply that strategy, how you approach your customers and how you keep them.
And then there are other aspects of marketing, like digital marketing that is the trend today by the way. But after all, the opinions diverge and you should find a solid ground to base your future on. I join James in his saying you should find a medium sized marketing firm to have an overall view, as I assume you don’t have a theoretical background yet. If not, try an advertising firm, or digital firm! The ambiance is usually better with young employees around. Good luck !

James’s Answer

Marketing is often confused with advertising. Marketing has many facets, and can get somewhat complicated. To begin with marketing involves a lot of research, surveys, and studies, and then above all experience. Then there's the design side, for example graphic design, art design, and several others similar areas. Exactly where you fit is up to your interests and talents. I always say get your feet wet before you dive in with a lot of time and money invested. find a medium sized marketing firm, not advertising firm, and ask them to let you hang around. Tell them you are interested in pursuing a career in marketing and would like to learn more about the industry. You may find that you fit in best on the advertising side of things. There is always someone out there willing to help. Once your familiar with the different roles in marketing then you can customize your marketing education to give you specific tools and degrees that will interest employers. Plenty of schools out there, choose wisely.
