What is best is not necessarily what makes the most money. However, if you want to focus on compensation, then I would say that getting a degree in finance would likely give you a higher income straight out of college than a degree accounting, marketing, operations, or other business majors. That assumes that you are among the best performers in your class, and you get a job at a top-firm.
However, I must caution you to consider that you will likely have better performance if you are interested in the topic you're studying, so don't go into finance ONLY because it makes money. Go into a field because you find it interesting. If you want to learn more about finance, I might suggest a question like "What are the types of things you learn in a finance degree?" or "In layman's terms, what does finance really mean?"

If you're aiming to make good money in business, there's no single major that guarantees the highest pay. Your salary will depend on your skills, experience, internships, location, and the industry you choose. However, some business majors often lead to better-paying jobs on average.
Finance is known for high-paying careers like investment banking, financial analysis, wealth management, and corporate finance. Accounting is another great option because there's always a need for accountants, auditors, and CPAs, offering a stable and clear career path. Business Analytics and Management Information Systems (MIS) are also in demand as companies need experts to analyze data and use tech for business decisions.
If you're unsure which path to take:
- Go for Accounting if you like structure, working with numbers, and want job security.
- Choose Finance if you’re interested in investments, markets, and financial strategies.
- Pick Business Analytics if you enjoy working with data and technology.
- Opt for Marketing if you're creative and interested in branding, sales, and consumer behavior.
For many, Accounting, Finance, and Business Analytics offer a great mix of earning potential, career opportunities, and growth.
If you're still in high school, try out both Accounting and Finance with some introductory courses. Accounting provides a solid base for almost any business career, and many professionals later move into finance, consulting, or even start their own businesses.

Various business degrees lead to great careers in business following school, but I would recommend focusing on what specific degree you enjoy and are most successful at. Rather than look at the salaries of the various majors, it will be beneficial to understand why you want to pursue a particular field. In the long run, choosing the highest paying job immediately after school (ie finance or accounting) will not necessarily lead to long-term personal and financial success. Best of luck in your decision!
