Hi, anything you do helps you to make new experiences and based on those you can make better decisions about your future career goals. I always believed in learning, growing and exploring. Be open to new opportunities and make the best of them. My first Internship was even before entering University and I took some more during my studies. It helped me a lot to make final decision on my career.

Hi Trish!

Yes, you should look into internship, coop, shadowing, volunteer opportunities as soon as possible. These are very important as you need to become more aware of the inside view of the major that you are following. A career area looks much different on the inside than on the outside. The most frustrating times that I had when I was doing college recruiting were when a graduate after being on the job for a short time found that he/she did not like it. You can avoid this be doing as much career exploration as possible. Your school adviser can help as well as your favorite professors. Also, here is a good site for locating internships:

Applying early to internships is great practice, even if you don't get the position. I started applying for internships sophomore year and the recruiters gave me feedback on what to work on that year so that I was a strong candidate my junior year. Since I was unable to get an internship sophomore year, I babysat and worked on a golf course. The following summer I was able to score an awesome internship. You will also learn the timing of when many companies are looking to hire. I learned that summer accounting internships are filled during the fall semester, over 6 months before the start date! Not every field is like this, however, it was one of the takeaways I learned starting the process early.

With job markets being so competitive, I think experience is very important. It is also advantageous to use your time while you are young to figure out what jobs you would like and dislike. This is best accomplished by having different experiences. Thus, I think an internship freshman year or just the summer after your freshman year, is a great idea.

Hi there!

I would recommend for you to definitely pursue some internships! I was a nanny throughout college as well, and while it pays good, there is nothing like real life experience in the field you want to spend the rest of your life in. Internships are good for both your personal experience and building a credible resume for future employers! Gaining knowledge about your desired field is something that can further your interest and your hunger for success.
