Sammy, great for you to have a goal of becoming a pediatrician! I'm not sure if you're asking about websites to help you reach your goal...but let's go over the basic process of becoming a pediatrician.

1) Be sure the classes you take in high school are ones which will prepare you to apply to college and do well there.
Let your guidance counselor know what your goal is so that you can be sure to take enough math and sciences.

2) Apply to and then attend college where you will need to take the"pre-med" classes which medical schools require. Be sure to connect with a pre-med or pre-health care advisor to be sure you are on track for med schools.

3) Apply to and then attend medical school which is typically four years. When you graduate you will be a doctor!

4) Then, if your goal is still to be a pediatrician, you will do a three year residency in pediatrics.

Here's a series of "Ask a Med Student" videos where lots of people ask questions of people studying to be doctors. https://students-residents.aamc.org/choosing-medical-career/ask-med-student-video-series
Stay in touch and keep in mind there are many ways to get involved with providing health care to young people if you want to explore other options, let us know. Good luck!

Sheila’s Answer

Hello Sammy:

Thank you for your question. Suzanne has provided some good insights on becoming a Pediatrician. I'd like to share the steps my son took to become a Pediatrician. He's now in the next phase of his journey, a Pediatric fellowship program for the next 3 years. The journey is long and expensive but quite rewarding. I hope you find these steps helpful. Best of luck to you!

• Get your Bachelor's Degree (4 years)
• Take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT Exam) and score well. Retake it if necessary
• Medical School (4 years)
• Begin the Licensure process
• Residency in Pediatrics (3 years)
• Become Board Certified
• Fellowship Program (3 years)
