When choosing a field of study would you prefer Computer Engineering or Computer Science?

I am applying to college and can't decide if I want to pursue Computer Engineering or Computer Science. I think I would enjoy both, so I'm considering a double major. Any advice would be appreciated. #computer-science #computer #computer-engineering

Joanne’s Answer

Computer Engineering is going to be harder (to put it bluntly); however, I'm a hands-on person so engineering is more appealing to me.

Instead of double majoring in two similar fields, consider minoring in something complimentary.

For example, major in computer engineering, but if you like data, consider a math-statistics minor.

.. or major in computer engineering, but if you like video games, consider some type of digital art.

Some programs will even help you with a business minor concentration.

Hanish’s Answer

Computer Engineering deals with CS and engineering, so you'll have to take a ton of science related courses like physics, chemistry, maths, etc. You will have to deal with this as a CS major too but it'll will likely focus mostly on the science of computers.

Brandon’s Answer

I would not say that Computer Engineering is "harder"; it's as hard as you want to make it depending on what you study in Computer Science. There are plenty of really challenging problems in the Computer Science field that can make your head spin; however, that's only if you study something that will make your head spin... everyone is different.

Joanne is right, you should double major in something that complements the other; certainly, Computer Engineering can compliment Computer Science well too. I specialized in realtime rendering in college and it's really helpful to know about the GPU. If you doubled these together, you would be a perfect fit for nvidia or anything related to parallel computing.

It's hard to answer this question without knowing more information about what you enjoy about these fields. Why did you choose these two fields? Which ones are you leaning towards and why? These are pretty different fields in my opinion.... Whichever one you choose, I'm sure you will be very successful and have no problem finding a job; both of these fields are growing and recruiting like crazy.
