Hi Brittanie,

I think it is an excellent choice in pursuing accounting. Payroll is just part of the equation but a very important one as it help workers to pay their bills and putting food on the table for the family. It is great to learn how payroll process is being done in a company but depending on the software that the company use, certain processes, legal and compliance handling will be different from company to company. Going to study while in a related job will be beneficial to both as you start to learn and work on about financial account, in particularly on payroll. I will recommend try getting a payroll job in a payroll solution company like ADP, and that is where you will learn all about ADP payroll solution. - https://jobs.adp.com/locations/uk/

Good Luck!

A payroll job would be a great way to jump start your career while earning your degree. Search for entry level jobs like "payroll assistant" and "payroll clerk." All that is required is attention to detail and 10-key/data entry skills. Once you're in the job, you will learn about disability insurance, tax withholding, garnishment, W-2 creation, and more. This is a great area of knowledge for an entrepreneur.

Thank you comment icon I started out as a payroll clerk, and the skills that I picked up are very valuable! I learned a lot about balancing, auditing, taxes, FMLA, PTO, Federal and State Labor Laws, and much more. Very good recommendation! David Walbroehl, aPHR

Hi There!

Getting a job in Payroll is an excellent way to prepare yourself for your accounting degree and for the future of work. I started out as a Payroll Specialist with no specific payroll/accounting qualification (I studied languages) and have since then grown to become a Sr International Payroll Manager. Payroll gives you an excellent insight into the way a business is run as you work with all departments. In particular for someone wanting to be an accountant, Payroll will allow you to prepare month end journals, do balance sheet reconciliations, manage cashflow and potentially get involved in planning.

I would recommend getting your foot in the door with an entry level payroll job - either Payroll Admin, Payroll Assistant or Payroll Specialist roles that are available all over the world.

Good luck!
