Does one bad grade like a 80 on my transcript affect my chances with top tier colleges?

I have been freaking out lately due to the constant drop in my AP US History quiz grades. Except for this class, I have excelled in my other classes. Additionally, I have never gotten a grade below 90 before and my overachieving mind hopes to find some reassurance from college counselors and admission experts. #college #college-admissions #college-bound #admissions-counseling

Ken’s Answer

Hi Esther!

Do not fear.

They will look at the overall grade picture - especially what you did after that score.

If things improve after that score, they will see that you are trying hard and that was just a fluke. If things continue to go down hill after that score, that is another matter which indicates that there is something that you might need to deal with to determine the cause. If the later is the case, you need to determine the cause and rectify it for your own good - not so much for those who would look at it from the outside.

It is very important to determine why you got the grade that you did. Talk to your school counselor, if you are not sure of the cause of your lower grade. It might indicate an improper alignment of classes vs your interest area.

Best of luck! Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress.

Hi Esther, I am not a college counsellor or an admissions expert, but I have been in your shoes. YOU ARE OK! Any good college cares more about you as a person and a student, than about a particular grade. I understand the panic of a score lower than (a) you expected and (b) you've ever received before. BUT colleges will pay attention to and recognize your overall excellence.

Rachel’s Answer

Don't freak out over one bad grade. Just try to pay attention in class, absorb as much as possible, and score well on the AP exam. Colleges will like at AP exam scores.
