What is the most aproppriate way to dress during an interview?

I learned in class about how to dress to impress and it's really interesting to see how people think some stuff is okay when it's really not. #jobs #high-school-classes #job-application

Hi Imani,

This is a great question because there are so many different answers out there, I know it can be confusing! The way I look at it, (as someone that’s interviewed dozens of potential interns), you need to dress your best.

You can’t go wrong with black slacks, a white or color shirt, and a blazer. You can find a lot of professional pants and blazers at Target, and a simple, silk blouse shouldn't be hard to find (the Portofino shirts from Express are perfect). As for shoes, feel free to wear heels if you're able to walk in them without struggling. If you aren't, go with professional flats or even slight wedges. You want to look polished and professional, and when you look great you'll feel great!

Even if the company is a very casual, relaxed place where everyone wears flip flops and T-shirts to work, you have not earned that privilege yet so you need to dress professionally. I've browsed through Pinterest for different outfit ideas and that has proven to be helpful, so check that out!

At the end of the day, a lot of companies are looking for candidates that they are confident will represent their company, clients, and customers well. So put your best foot forward and keep it simple and polished.

Best of luck to you on your interviews, and remember the best accessory you can wear is confidence!
Best,
Erin

Hi Imani,

I agree with Erin, always dress your best. For any interview that I went I was always dressed in business attire and I think this is also what the interviewer expects.

Sandro

Ulrike’s Answer

Hi Imani,

My experience is that the dress code should depend on the target audience, the event as such as well as you being authenic.
For example if you´d apply for a banking job, you will be expected to dress business like, decent, maybe a little conservative.

However if you are an artist and apply for a specific job, you might well be dressed a little more extravagant, showing your personality and brand.

Hence my take is: think about the event and the target audience. You appearance shout fit accordingly and you should feel comfortable in what you are wearing. However sometimes it might also help to dress a little different. Again it´s all about taste and expectations at the end of the day.

Regards Ulrike
