Are there any careers that could combine a psychology major and a love of theater?

I am a senior in high school and have always had a fondness for theater, specifically the behind the scenes work rather than actually performing. Recently I have been thinking about possible majors and career paths certain majors could open up for me and, although I love theater, I don't think I will major in it. I might major in psychology, though, but I still want to be able to have a foot in the dramatics as I develop a career path. Are there any careers that allow this? #career #psychology #career-paths #theater #multiple-interests

Hi Teal,
In short the answer is yes, Yes, YES! If you choose to be a therapist (who has a passion for theater), you will find clients who also love theater and drama; therefor therapies exist that cater to these clients. There is an entire subsection of the therapy world called Drama Therapy, and you can become certified as a Drama Therapist. There is a similar therapy called Psychodrama, which is something I am trained in and absolutely love!!!! Plenty of schools combine the Arts with Psychology; I'm not sure where you're located but I am in the Chicago area. Columbia College of Chicago offers degrees in: Art Therapy, Dance Therapy, Drama Therapy etc. With a little googling you should be able to find plenty of information that will be helpful in your journey. Go chase your dreams!

Thank you comment icon Really? This is fantastic. I love working with theater(not performing so much), so hearing I can still be part of that community without having to be one of the stars is so relieving. Thank you! Teal
Thank you comment icon Great answer Jennifer. I had no idea that there were so many options to combine these two passions. Scott Turner
Thank you comment icon You can also go into stage management. Having the understanding of people goes a long way as a stage manager Sarah Perlin

Hi Teal! I love this question. In addition to some of the suggestions in the other great answers, I would add that you can always stay active in a community theatre. Just as professional theatres need folks behind the scenes to make the production come to life, community theatres offer a wide variety of behind-the-scenes positions as well. You could look into building or designing the sets, maintaining the costumes, marketing or producing, or even directing in your spare time as you pursue a career in psychology :)
