When you have an video interview, what is the appropriate dress attire?
I had a video interview before, and I was dressed extremely business professional. The interviewer only told me I didn't have to dress professionally since it was a video chat. I would like to know the appropriate dress attire you all would recommend?

Professional attire, always!
To me it does two things, one it shows the candidate is serious for the interview and is really interested in the job. Second, it boosts your level of confidence.

Even though you are not interviewing for the position in person, appearance still matters, dress up formally..
Please ensure, you have enough lighting in the area where you are taking up the interview.
Do make sure, there's no background noises while taking interview.

I am going to suggest you dress to impress, no matter the type of interview, unless its over the phone. you never know how much of your person they can see.

I totally agree with you choosing to be dressed professionally for your video interview. I find that my attire drive my confidence whether I am in a front facing situation or using technology to communicate. Although your interview was not front facing, there may have been other decision makers in the room who decided to sit in on your interview. Your choice to dress appropriately could be the difference between you and the other candidates who applied.

I completely agree with the previous responses. I was always taught to "dress for the part you want; not the part you have". Keep this in mind and you will go far!

The simple philosophy is that if you are appearing for job interview, you want to work at that firm. You should then dress accordingly to what you position you finally aspire to at that firm.
Not now, but where you want to go to finally in that firm. In future. So dress accordingly.
This is more of a personal barometer I go by. The job will help provide for whatever you need to survive in the world. So, in a way each job is sacrosanct in furthering what we want from life. So your workplace is as important to your life aspirations as in old days church or temple was to people's lives. And everyone go in sunday best to the church, thus, you should always dress in your best for the work and by extension for job interview.

Hi Tamiya,
That's an excellent question. I have always followed the "Dress for the position you aspire to." philosophy for interviews (both in person and video). Prior to starting my career in telecommunications, I worked in the staffing industry for about 10 years. I can assure you that I never thought poorly of someone who was "overdressed" when they came in for an interview with me. It could be one thing that sets you apart from the field of candidates. :)
Another suggestion would be to do your homework on the company that you are interviewing with and determine what their corporate culture and/or dress code is, then perhaps choose your attire at one level above their norm. So, if their corporate culture is casual, perhaps for a video interview, go business casual, etc. It should never hurt you to dress to impress in classic, professional attire.
Good luck in your future career!

Ammy Theobald

hello! Apart from all the good advice, we also recommend:
Make sure the table and your surroundings are clean and neat. You don't want to distract the interviewer.
If you're interviewing in your home, make sure that you are in a quiet space with no barking dogs, children, music, or other sounds. As well, turn off your phone and any alerts on your computer to avoid getting thrown off by emails or instant messages during the interview.
The microphone will pick up any noise in the room, so don't tap your pen or shuffle papers.
Make eye contact, and remember, that means looking at the camera (and not the picture-in-picture image of yourself).

Attire is dependent on the company you are interviewing with, but you can't go wrong with dressing professionally! The general rule of thumb is to dress one step above what the day to day attire of the company is (i.e. wear business casual for a company that dresses down, business professional for a business casual), but if you aren't sure, go with business professional. Good luck!

Hello,
I would ALWAYS recommend dressing and acting as if you were interviewing with this person face to face, just as it is important to "smile" when your on the phone with a customer it is important to have the same feeling as if you were sitting in front of this person. With every job interview you should be as prepared and as professional as you can be which a interviewer would take you more seriously. Most importantly about dressing up for a phone/web interview is the feeling that you as the interviewee would go through and dressing up, making yourself look good well it all makes you feel good which will shed positively in your interview. Best of Luck!!
