Mark’s Answer

Hi There - I'm not expert on film-making, but did produce a few music videos as a side project for work The best advice I can give for anyone to pursue their passion (movies, music, art, etc) is to just do it. Try things. Fail often and quickly. Learn. Try more things.

If you have a smart phone, you're ready to start making movies! :o) Good luck!

Jamie’s Answer

Exactly as Mark wrote. Start making movies right now.

With Youtube and the internet the traditional doors to entry are no longer closed. You can make a film that can be seen by every person in the world.

Watch films that inspire you and see how they created them with camera moves, lighting, etc.

“Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn.” T.S. Eliot

Or in a simplified version “Lesser artists borrow; great artists steal” Pablo Picasso

And finally the latest version "“Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” Steve Jobs

So as you can see... we all stand on the shoulders of those before us.

Go out... create... put it out in the world and keep going!

Justine’s Answer

There are so many different facets and career paths in filmmaking and getting a grasp on how all of them work and are used to tell a story is great. As other folks have answered, if you've got a camera you can create. If you've got any editing software you can tell a story. Learn about acting and directing actors, even for local theater. Learn about color and light and how they are used to tell a story. Study artwork to how see framing and scale creates drama. Study photography to learn about depth of field and lenses. Write down your stories, re-write them, and then draw storyboards to imagine how the scenes will flow visually. Filmmaking may only be about 100 years old but story telling with writing, acting, photography, color, light, props, and every other device filmmakers have been pulling from are as old has human existence. Sign up for free tutorials anywhere or sites like Lynda.com to learn the technical side. Network with those around you who have experience. Get on set as soon as you can as a Production Assistant to listen and watch it all come together. Help others with their projects and build a resume.
