My ultimate goal after advanced training is to work on a cruise ship so I can travel while working. Does anyone have any suggestions for or against working in cruise lines?

I've worked as a cook at a retirement home (cafeteria style cooking) for 4 months so far, and am currently attending the Job Corps Program. #travel #career

Hi Roux, if your goal is to travel the world, working on a cruise ship is a great choice. I lived on a cruise ship through a program called Semester at Sea for 3.5 months as a student and loved every minute of it. Keep in mind, working on a cruise ship is a lifestyle choice. You may not get as much free time to roam the ship as you'd like, and your "off ship" time may be limited, too. I'd focus on doing research specifically on the "day in the life" to make sure it's a good fit for you, first. As pay might be low (depending on the position you choose), you might want to be prepared to leave the industry after a handful of years to pursue something else -- but your experience will sell excellently, especially in the tourism industry.

Talk to your local US Navy and Coast Guard recruiters. You’re best pathway would begin with a tour of duty with either military service, getting FREE world class training.

You’ll earn Veteran status for the rest of your life, and valuable experience for a life at sea with the Merchant Marine in one of the Cruise lines.

I love cruises and have had lots of conversations with the employees while I was cruising. Do your research, some love it and some not so much. It is a long time away from home and most of these folks are leaving wives, husbands, children for extended periods. Most of the crew on these cruiselines are very happy with what they are doing. How cool is it to be out in the middle of the Caribbean, going to all the different ports, there's that!!!! Also, look for forums on the internet. Good luck.

Roux, E.
I would go against working on a cruise ship, your best bet would be to be a private chef on a rich persons yacht or something like the show below deck. reasoning is that you wont have time to see the world on a cruise ship, you will work 6 to 7 days a week usually from 5am to 8pm. as my old friend had told me.
but its up to you, also if you want to see the world, then you can join the armed forces and see more of the world then you would on a cruise ship
