In most states, you need to go to law school, typically after getting your undergraduate degree. Upon completing law school, you have to take the state bar exam, which then entitles you ability to become a lawyer. Per your profile, you're in California--one of the few states where you don't have to go to law school to take the state bar exam (https://cdtalaw.com/cdta/can-i-take-the-california-bar-exam-without-going-to-law-school/).

As Michael said, once you become a lawyer, you typically need hard work, experience, and good performance to get promotions.

I agree with the above answers. In the US, becoming a lawyer requires either education (law school) or (if the state/jurisdiction allows), significant training under the supervision of a lawyer in an apprenticeship program. Either way, you still need to take the bar exam, and other exams.

Once a lawyer, there is definitely room for advancement/promotion, but it all stays within that legal arena.
